Today, I will illustrate an absolute guide for installing an SSL certificate on Red Hat Linux Apache Server.

The process includes three steps for the successful accomplishment of SSL certificate installation on Red Hat Linux Apache Server.

Let’s discuss these four steps and protect Red Hat Linux Apache Server users.

Step 1: Download Certificates

After the successful validation process, the Certificate Authority will issue the certificates. They will send a link of a zip file. You can download the certificate through that link.

Step 2: Extract the Certificate Files

Once you download all the necessary certificates to your hard-drive, extract them on your web server located on your computer.

Step 3: Create a file with your certificate details

You need to create a file called yourwebsite.crt, and then paste the certificate details which you received from the Certificate Authority.

For example; The certificate details will contain the below type of information.

“ ——-BEGIN CERTIFICATE——–
Cryptographic Data
———END CERTIFICATE———– “

Please save yourwebsite.crt file on your website after creating it with the details of the certificate. Make sure you place it on the configuration directory of Red Hat Linux Apache Server.

For example – /yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/.

Here are the other clear examples which we demonstrated for learning purpose only.

/yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/
/yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.key/
/yourdomain/httpd/conf/ca-bundle/

In the first location, you need to add all your certificates. In the second location, you need to add your server’s private key. On the third location, you need to add the bundles of the certificate.

Step 4: Installation of SSL Certificate

You can process the installation of SSL certificate through editing Virtual Host Setting. Let us explain the steps for editing the Virtual Host file.

  • Convert your certificate to PEM format, then saved the file on the third location which we described in the previous step.
  • Open the configuration file (httpd.config) using normal text editor.
  • Copy the PEM file information, and then past it into the httpd.config file. Make sure that you add the information in SSL area only. For example; SSLCACertificateFile /yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/ca-chain-pem.txt

The following edit will look like this:

SSLCertificateFile /yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/server.crt
SSLCertificateKeyFile /yourdomain/httpd/conf/ssl.key/server.key
SSLCACertificateFile / yourdomain /httpd/conf/ssl.crt/ca-chain-pem.txt

That’s it. All you need to do just save the httpd.config file and restart your Red Hat Linux Apache Server.
