This article includes the clear steps for installing a Wildcard SSL Certificate in Apache Server

Before you start the installation process for wildcard SSL certificate on Apache server, you need to obtain the Certificate Signing Request and Private Key for your certificate.

In order to generate a wildcard SSL certificate Certificate Signing Request (CSR), you can use online wildcard CSR generation tools. We got few major CSR tools from Certificate Authorities.

Note: A wildcard SSL certificate CSR needs a common name in different format like *.yourdomain.com.

Once you obtain CSR and private key, you need to process for certificate issuance process. Upon the validation process status, the Certificate Authority will issue a wildcard SSL certificate for your website.

The Certificate Authority will send the zip file containing the major certificate files like an intermediate certificate and root certificate.

Let’s start with the process of Wildcard SSL Certificate Installation on Apache Server.

Step 1: Copy all the necessary files like an intermediate certificate, root certificate, and private key.

Step 2: Paste all the certificate files into the root directory of the computer. For illustration;  /usr/local/ssl/crt/.

Step 3: Access Virtual Host config file, and obtain the path of files where you had placed all those certificates.

SSLCertificateFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/ssl_certificate.crt

SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/local/ssl/private/private.key

SSLCACertificateFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/intermediateCA.crt

Step 4: Save your Virtual Host Config file and restart Apache server. That’s it.
